Well today I took one step closer to 30. It’s funny as teenagers how we count down the time until we turn 16, then 18, then 21, and then it just stops. Driving, lottery tickets and voting, and then finally drinking. We tackle these milestones as if we have actually achieved something in life (don’t get me wrong, for some people living to see 21 is an achievement in itself). But once we turn 22, we look forward for the next achievement, and with a sense of panic we realize the next age milestone in live is retirement. Driving becomes a pain what with the traffic and Asian people (I’m not racist, but let’s call a spade a spade, they just cannot drive), more than half of the eligible voters in this country do not exercise their right, and we trade in a Friday night of binge drinking for a movie on the sofa and in bed by 10. So as my latest trip around the sun comes to an end today, and my next trip begins, I have to ask myself, self, “is this it until retirement?” Am I destined to just ride out the next 37 years of non-milestone birthdays until that glorious day when I can just quit my job and live off the 401k?
Well the first thing I did was to stop talking to myself, I’m far to young to be senile, and the second thing I did was to remind myself that while I may have aged another year today, my maturity level has maintained a constant 18 years of age. Knowing that I still find immature things, such as the video below, funny really helps me sleep at night. I’ll worry more about getting old when I hit 30….
